Kava Surfaces

Kava Surfaces

As interest in biophilic design grows, there is increasing recognition that surface materials play a critical role in shaping how spaces are experienced. Colour, texture, and tactility influence comfort, wellbeing, and emotional connection, yet many conventional surface finishes are highly processed, resource-intensive, and visually disconnected from natural systems. Kava responds to this challenge by exploring how everyday waste materials can be transformed into expressive, nature-connected surfaces that bring warmth, depth, and material authenticity into interior environments.

Kava is a UK-based surface materials studio specialising in panels made from recycledcoffee grounds and bio-based binders. By repurposing a globally abundant organic wastestream, Kava creates richly textured surfaces that retain the natural pigmentation, grain, and variation of coffee itself. Each panel is produced through a low-energy process thatvalues material character over uniformity, resulting in finishes that feel tactile, grounded, and inherently individual. Kava surfaces are suited to interior applications includingfurniture, wall panelling, counters, and decorative features, and are developed in closecollaboration with designers, makers, and commercial partners.

What defines Kava is its emphasis on sensory material experience alongside environmental responsibility. Rather than masking origin or variation, the material celebrates its source, allowing colour shifts, particulate texture, and subt le imperfections to remain visible. This approach aligns strongly with biophilic design principles, encouraging connection through material honesty, natural cues, and tactile engagement. By giving coffee waste a second life as a durable interior surface, K ava contributes to a more regenerative approach to material design while offering designers an alternative to synthetic and mineral - based finishes
